Best Winter Running Socks
From About.com, Running and Jogging
Wearing the right running socks when running in the cold weather is not just a matter of comfort, it’s also a safety issue. If your feet get too cold and wet, you could be at risk for frostbite. Try some of these running socks for maximum comfort and protection.
SmartWool Adrenaline Socks
These socks are actually designed to keep your feet warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The SmartWool Merino wool allows for superior temperature regulation and moisture management, and the socks’ SmartFit System puts technology to work by adding cushion and support where it’s needed, without extra weight.
Thorlo Thick Cushion Running Sock
Many runners swear by Thorlo socks for their cushioning, comfort and blister protection. These socks feature maximum fitness density padding for better durability, as well as protection against shock and impact. The lightweight padding in the arch provides arch support and a better fit.
Feetures Bamboo and Wool Running Socks
The wool in these running socks insulates your feet, keeping them at a comfortable temperature, while bamboo makes the sock soft, and antimicrobial to prevent foot odor. And it’s eco-friendly, too! Both fibers wick away moisture, so feet stay dry.
Drymax Cold Weather Running Socks
Drymax Cold Weather Running Socks have a special Dual Layer Moisture Removal System, which instantly moves moisture from the skin, through the inner Drymax layer to the outer absorbent layer, keeping feet dry. A third layer of Drymax fiber insulation was added along the front of the sock, since that area gets coldest due to wind chill. The socks also feature dense padding (rather than thick padding), as it protects feet without adversely affecting the fit of the shoes. These socks are designed for use in cold to cool conditions, keeping feet dry, comfortable and odor-free.

So Little Hotties Science Experiment day #2 update. Leigh (being the bright child he is) brought up the hypothesis that maybe the ambient temperature was affecting the heating elements of the Little Hotties. Interesting idea. Would someone please let me borrow their child so we can run a REAL science experiment on this? The real life test today was that I accidentally forgot my little hotties in my coat pocket and by the time I got to work they were HOT. Seriously, like I couldn’t hold them in my hand they were so hot. 8:03am. Go figure.
And I swear by Thorlo socks. They rock.
Tracy’s little hotties conversations bring me hours of entertainment. And I am happy to let you borrow Joshua and Zachary but it does require that you keep them overnight.
Regarding socks, I think thinner is better so I typically wear Nike Dri-Fit socks.
Looking forward to a new workout tomorrow. It was created during the planning stages of BC4C and never been attempted on bootcampers until tomorrow. Promise it will be fun.
Until then.
SHAMELESS PLUG:
Today is the last day for voting and my sister’s book, the Sorcerer’s Apprentices is in the finals for food books. Please vote and encourage your friends to vote as well. Thanks.

Anyone else experiencing any chafing?
Chafing? Anyone?
That was odd, did not let me post the first comment, and then posted anyway…
So, December veterans = workout guinea pigs? I’m flattered (not).
Mary, talked to Brett — not only might we see him tomorrow (don’t hold your breath), but he has confirmed he will be attending Sunday
Andrew — am I missing the BC4C category for ‘Best Winter Clothes: Pants that keep your arse warm’? While I appreciate the socks advice, really am looking for the pants advice after today.
Julie, I highly recommend Nike Thermal wear. There are pants, tops, and jackets. I especially love the pants because they have a wide elastic band rather than a tie. I also recommend getting cold weather tops with elastic on the bottom so they don’t ride up. I promise there is little worse than feeling the cold, soggy ground on the lower back.
Thanks for a fun WO Andrew! I love incline push ups and not because some people think they are easy. For me, regular push ups work more of my shoulders than chest.
Speaking of lower back, anyone else experiencing the lovely bruising going on on the small of your back/upper butt area thanks to row boats in the dirt and concrete situps? How’s that for a run-on!
People can’t even believe that we do what we do when I tell them things like this!
Julie and others, if you act quick you can get some relatively cheap winter gear at http://runningwarehouse.com/ Their Cyber Monday sale goes through tomorrow, where you can get 25% off select winter gear items. BC4C has a “team” discount with them by using the code BOOT4AD, which gets you 15% off most purchases. I don’t think they will stack the discounts though.
Back on the blog topic, the same website has a pretty good selection of both cold weather and warm weather socks. I recently purchased some Pearl Izumi wool socks that I’ve been pleased with.
Tracy .. I think 4 children will provide for an accurate sample for such an experiment. Andy .. can you please grab my rugrats on the way to Tracy’s? I am sure you will need a good 48 hours do to this right. Let me know what else I can do to help.
As for socks, I really want a pair of the red knee socks Andrew was sporting this morning. They look great and I bet they are warm. Meanwhile, when it’s REALLY cold .. I throw on my bright purple or orange “balga — hidden comfort” socks knabbed at Phidippides. One of the young hotties there sold me on these socks with an outrageous price tag but they NEVER wear down, they breathe well, are soft and are toasty warm. How can you pass up those colors?
Are we in danger of frostbite when we are out for 1 hour (and fifteen minutes)? Can I wing it for a few months with my cotton socks?
You can wing it, Kate! My feet were totally frozen at Serenbe and I still have all my toes.
Two days away feels like an eternity! See you all tomorrow.
