Spotlight on the Camper: Tabatha Michel
Have you ever wondered who brought the bourbon breeze that swept in from the Big Easy and rocked Piedmont Park like a hurricane? That would be our own Tabatha Michel! Originally from New Orleans, Tabatha will throw you some beads if you ask her politely.
Outside of boot camp, Tabatha is a Major Gift Fundraiser at the National Office of the Arthritis Foundation. She is the proud (and the coolest) aunt to two teenage nephews and an adorable 7 year-old niece. Her extended family includes over 70 first cousins on her mom’s side alone. She couldn’t begin to count the 2nd and 3rd cousins! We assume she is probably related to everyone at BC4C.
Tabatha blames Robin for getting her involved with BC4C. They worked together and Robin tricked her with positive propaganda about her boot camp experience. To our advantage, Tabatha signed up without even coming to Bring A Friend Day. Tabatha loves BC4C because it combined two things that are a big part of her life: philanthropy and her new-found commitment to getting healthier.
Growing up, Tabatha was a dancer. Her family had a dance school, so fitness in the form of dance and acrobats was part of her every day routine. And it all came to a screeching halt after high school. Tabatha had many false starts throughout the last 15 years trying to get back in shape.
When Tabatha first started boot camp her initial goal was pretty simple… lose weight by getting in shape. She wanted to become a runner again, and she couldn’t get any momentum on her own. When she started boot camp, she could NOT do one sit-up on her own; only modified push-ups; and she couldn’t run the PT loop without stopping. She is pretty sure she cried when she left the first day, because she wasn’t sure she could ever get fit again. But then she thought… if not now, when?
When it comes to diet and fitness Tabatha’s biggest challenge is her of love food and adult beverages! It’s what them Cajuns do for hobbies and entertainment! Tabatha loves to cook and entertain. She can find a reason to have a party any day or time of the year. After nearly two years of boot camp, she is just figuring out how to balance the two lifestyles a bit better.
Tabatha has made tremendous strides since starting BC4C. In 2010 alone, she ran her first official 5K, 10K and half-marathon! And now, she loves to run. She never thought a 6–12 mile run would be a part of her Saturday morning routine, but now it is. It keeps her focused, even if her week has been crazy. In March, Tabatha ran her second half marathon and surprised herself with a PR of 2:18, which was 16 minutes faster than her first in November.
As for diet, this year, Tabatha decided that if she going to play hard, she would have to work harder to stay fit. Since late January, she started tracking calories in vs. calories burned. It’s really working for her and she’s dropped 15 pounds in less than 3 months. She already feels the difference when working out or running. She still throws parties… she just runs a lot more!
Tabatha’s Fun Facts
Favorite exercise: Tabatha prefers lower body exercises — squats, lunges, jump-ups. But ab work is finally growing on her!
Favorite workout: Tabatha likes the disguised run days the most. She likes any workout with a good balance of running and workout stations. She loves the dice game, even though she is always on Lauren’s team and they lose.
Advice to brand new campers: It will get better! Just go at your own pace. And let the Trainers know when you’re trying to accomplish something new. They’re great at helping you get there.
The best thing a boot camp Trainer has done for Tabatha: ALL the instructors have helped her meet her fitness goals. Each Trainer seems to know what she needs for inspiration at the time. Early on, she was so frustrated that she couldn’t run. She remembers that Andy and Susan really helped with her with form. For months, they would lag behind and just keep pushing her and telling her it would get better. It really made a difference then. And now, she was so inspired to see them before the half marathon. It was an eye-opening reminder of how far she has come. And right about the time she was starting to feel the race in her legs, Lauren jumped in and ran with her. It was just the jolt of energy she needed!
Did you know? Tabatha is a poker player and you can occasionally find her in a casino at a Texas Hold ‘em table. She has placed “in the money” in two World Series of Poker circuit events. Her best tournament finish was 3rd in a women’s event… she won $5,500. (Note to self: do not ever get roped into a poker game with Tabatha.)
Next time you see Tabatha, be sure to give her a big high-five for her accomplishments in the park… and beyond!

Thank you Lauren for the push this morning!! It is amazing what I can do when someone challenges me.
Great workout Susan!!
Yay for Tabatha! She has a great attitude, and her hard work has really paid off. One of my favorite memories of Tabatha is when she brought her boyfriend to Try Us Out Day and completely smoked him.
Tabatha– how inspiring!! Way to go!!!!!
Sorry I missed this morning. I would have been late, and the embarrassment of being 15 minutes late made me not come:(
So, I went to a spin class instead. Not nearly as much fun–
Great work out this morning Leigh and Susan, I had not done that one in a long time. It may have been one of my first months with bc4c. Thanks for the extra push at the end Leigh.
Nice warm up Lauren.
Tabatha — Great to see such progress, makes me wonder why I have yet to do a 1/2 marathon. I have a new goal, any recommendations on one in the fall or before it gets hot???
tomorrow, dont forget the 18 BURPEES!!!!!!
Tabatha is the energizer bunny. She just keeps going in her quiet manner, but nothing stops her.
A few weeks ago she has twisted an ankle — which swelled — but she was out there the next day because the swelling had gone down.
And to see the progress she has made, especially in running, speaks volumes about her. Love having her as part of the BC4C family.
On the other hand, I think we’d all be happy if Leigh was voted off the island after what is probably one of the toughest workouts we have. Did anyone make the fabled 4th round that Andrew spoke of?
I saw great effort from CP, Lynn, Wendy, Sarah, Shawn, Jeff and Brandon on my side of the field. Looking for more of that tomorrow — to go along with our 19 burpees.
Darn, I am out most of this week because of travel. I may be able to make Wed if something is going on, and Thursday. Have fun!
Yeah Tabatha! You are such an inspiration and motivation to just keep moving forward!
Congratulations on your accomplishments and Thank You for helping me meet some of mine.
I have missed being in the park but a sinus infection has taken me out. I hope to be back tomorrow or Thursday at the lastest.
Happy Monday!
I hope you all enjoyed today. It has been a while since we’ve had that one on the schedule, and it is definitely a tough one. Hopefully it at least broke up some of the lactic acid that had been hanging around in your legs since Friday.
Just in case anyone was curious the suicides were set up in approximate 20 meter intervals. Each full round consisted of 600 meters of running. For anyone who made it to the 4th cone on the 3rd round that would have been nearly a mile of suicides. Also by round 3 you were working on 60 combined reps per exercise.
It has been great to see how far Tab has come. Even more impressive is that her half marathon training has been primarily solo. I’ve seen her a couple times on Saturday mornings running up Peachtree.
Tabatha is a running machine! I saw her at the Thanksgiving Half and she looked like it was just a walk in the park for her.
Today was brutal, but I’m glad to have it under my belt. Accomplished my first unassisted jump ups (on the bench)…a big step for me b/c I’ve been terrified of those since Perry’s shin accident last summer.
I hope you feel better soon, Marcia. We were wondering where you were!
Aaaaaa! The infamous Perry shin catastrophe! What memories, what disgusting memories.
Great job today everyone! I really enjoyed getting through my burpees with Sean and Wendy. I also loved watching Kara totally kick ass and tear up those suicides. She is freakin’ amazing. I swear she was on round 5.
See you tomorrow!
Tabatha is a super trooper! She’s as sure as the sun every morning… and has the personality to match! (However, how ironic that Tabatha was out this morning… she must have a good reason… )
Running a half-marathon at all is a huge accomplishment. To run two in a 4 month period, AND improve by 16 minutes on top of all that… well, that’s just amazing.
Thanks Leigh for a helluva workout this morning. I did enough burpees for today and for the 16 I missed on Saturday! :-O
Congrats to Tabatha on all those accomplishments! Very inspirational and makes me want to set some new goals too, like Brandon. We’ll have to see about that.
Great, tough workout this morning, Leigh. Thanks for the push during the long sprint. Between Friday’s workout and today’s, I feel like I am in constant soreness mode. Maybe it’s all the burpees too?!?! See everyone tomorrow.
Tabatha, you are indeed very inspiring! Congratulations on your achievements, I’m sure there will be many more PR’s to come!
I’m sore from this morning already. Good workout Leigh, it was tough but much better than nonstop suicides any day!!
Thanks for all the kind words! I would still be running 2 minutes at a time had it not been for boot camp
It’s easy to find inspiration with this group of instructors and fellow campers. It’s nice to see progress, but I still have lots of fitness and weight loss goals to meet this year. So, I’ll thank the instructors in advance for keeping me honest!
Lauren — I wish I had a better excuse for this morning, but I was simply wiped out from being part of a wedding party this weekend. However, I am paying for my weekend of revelry now…with 66 burpees today!
High-5, Tabatha! So glad you’re a part of the BC4C family. It’s awesome to work out with you in the park in the AM. Almost as awesome as your half-marathoner status! Woot!
I’ll toast to that!
