Breakfast on the Go: Oatmeal Edition
BY KATHLEEN
McDonald’s now offers oatmeal in its latest attempt to offer seemingly more nutritious options. Unfortunately, McDonald’s version of oatmeal contains a laundry list of not-so-natural ingredients and has more sugar than a Snickers bar and nearly the same calories as an Egg McMuffin. You can read more details in New York Times article, “How to Make Oatmeal… Wrong.”
While cooking oatmeal at home is probably your best option, Caribou Coffee offers a version better than McDonald’s. If you order the classic 7-grain oatmeal with skim milk, you get more fiber and protein and less fat than Mickey D’s. Also, the ingredients are things found in a kitchen rather than a lab. The specifics can be found on Caribou’s website.

The hills were definitely alive with the sound of boot camp. Thank you Sarah for the wonderful time.
This was a great way to start the week. A tough core workout with some hill sprints (welcome back Andrew) really gets the body strong.
As Susan was saying during the cool down — remember to layer and be ready to strip as it can get pretty humid pretty quickly. Also up your water intake by a glass or two a day as the temps increase.
See everyone tomorrow.
HILLS!
Very well done today, booties. What a way to kick off the week. And I swear the birds were up earlier and louder than normal this morning.
Don’t forget to drink lots of water today! Maybe if you’re lucky, Susan and I will do the Jerry Seinfeld bit about “hydrating” tomorrow morning.
Thanks Sarah, for a great start to the week. And, thank you Leigh for pushing me along today!
M.E. — the birds are loud these days! It’s nice to hear.
Looks like rain tomorrow, so I will layer up for sure! See you then!
Great WO this morning Sarah, Thank you!!!
Dont forget your rubbers tomorrow lots O rain!!!
They may be uncomfortable but will help your feet stay dry.
Kathleen I see your McDonalds’ Oatmeal and raise you McRunner ( http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/03/11/can-it-be-done-mcrunner-trains-for-marathon-on-all-mcdonalds-diet/ and http://www.mcrunner.com ) Though I guess the moral of the story is that in order to partake at that level you need to be running 100 miles every week.
Great job with the workout today. The hills were a nice twist.
Thanks, good workout today! It was dark, but at least not freezing. Good to know, and not surprising, about McDonald’s oatmeal. Is Starbucks oatmeal better?
Also, a reminder for anyone interested in running the Peachtree this year. The registration lottery opens tomorrow. You have until the 24th to enter the lottery. My guess is there shouldn’t be too many people that don’t get in as they increased the field to 60,000 this year. More information at http://www.atlantatrackclub.org
Sarah, that was a tough workout but a good way to being the week and work off everything I consumed this weekend!
See everyone tomorrow!
Thanks Sarah for a great workout!
Emily, I just checked Starbuck’s website and the oatmeal looks like a good choice. The oatmeal without add-ons has 140 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 4 grams of fiber, and 5 grams of protein. Brown sugar will add 50 calories but no fat, and the dried fruit topping adds 100 calories, no fat, and 2 grams of fiber.
Thanks Sarah — great workout! Good job everyone. Definitely a good start to the week.
Hydration, Hydration, Hydration.….remember when we’d have one sip from the school water fountain and run around for 28 hours? ha ha Jerry’s still got it, he can make something funny out of NOTHING!
See you in the morning! T minus 54.5 hours until St. Patrick’s Day.….….….
